Heart disease remains the leading cause of death in our communities, and most of the risk sits in habits you can influence. The goal is not perfection — it is consistency you can sustain for years.

Start with movement: 30 minutes of brisk walking five days a week measurably lowers blood pressure. Then sodium: most of it comes from packaged food and restaurant meals, not the salt shaker.

Sleep is the most overlooked cardiac risk factor. Fewer than six hours a night is associated with higher blood pressure and worse glucose control, so protect a consistent bedtime.

Finally, know your numbers. Blood pressure, LDL cholesterol, and A1c should be checked at least annually, and more often if you have a family history of early heart disease.
